An ancient species, fossil remains demonstrate that Dragonflies predate the Jurassic Era with few changes to their impeccable design. Dragonflies are born in mud, where their eggs are placed below the surface of the water. As they mature, they take on magnificent iridescent colors and powerful airborne grace.

In flight, Dragonflies are known to reach speeds over 30 miles per hour -- incredibly fast for its size. The Dragonfly seems tireless in its quest for prey; catching all it can, devouring all it catches, helping to rid the air of mosquitos and other flying pests.

In ancient times, legend held that when sinners entered the gates of Hades for the crime of lying, their mouths were stitched closed with "The Devil's Darning Needles" -- Dragonflies. In Japan, the first emperor named his country Akitsushima (Island of Dragonflies or Dragonfly Island), where they are still seen as icons of strength, courage, success and victory. In Ireland, it has been said that many folks have mistaken Dragonflies for faeries (and perhaps, vice versa).

Dragonflies are elegant survivors whose symbolism is shared in many cultures around the globe: perseverance, purity, rebirth, and truth.
